In 2024, the average home price in Italy is $372,000 for a 2,000-square-foot home, or $186 per square foot. Compared to the Spanish real estate market and Portuguese real estate, buying a home in Italy is more affordable.

The most expensive region to buy a house in Italy is the spectacular Trentino-South Tyrol, in most northern part of Italy, where a 2,000 square foot home costs on average $642,000. That’s a price per square foot of $321. Real estate prices in the region of Trentino-South Tyrol increased by 11.5% year over year.

Aosta Valley is the second most expensive region to buy a house in Italy. An average 2,000 sqft home goes for $536,000, since the price per square foot is $268. Real estate prices in Aosta Valley stagnated compared to the previous year.

The third most expensive region to buy a house in Italy is Liguria, where an average home costs around $512,000 or $256 per square foot. Liguria’s average home prices have not changed year over year.

The most affordable region in Italy to buy a house is Molise, a central-southern region of Italy, where you can purchase a 2,000 square foot home for as little as $180,000 on average, or $90 per square foot. Real estate prices in Molise saw an increase of 2.8% compared to the same time last year. 

The second cheapest homes in Italy are in Calabria. The average home price in this Southern region is $182,000, or $91 per square foot. Home prices in Calabria are down  -2.2% compared to one year prior.

The third most affordable homes for sale in Italy are in Sicily. The cost of an average 2,000 sqft house in Sicily is $208,000, at $106 per square foot. Real estate prices in Sicily, Italy have increased 0.2% year over year.

An average 200-square-meter house in Italy costs around €364,200, or €1,821 per square meter. The highest house prices in Italy are in the Trentino-South Tyrol region, where a 200 square meter home costs €628,800. This is based on a cost per square meter of €3,144.

The cheapest house prices in Italy are in the region of Molise, where an average-sized home goes for €176,200. That is on average €881 per square meter.

The cost to buy a home in Italy's major cities varies greatly from north to south. In Milan, the most cosmopolitan city in Italy, a 2,000 square foot home can cost as much as $1 million, more precisely $1,020,000, at a price per square foot of $510, the most expensive of the largest cities in Italy.

Other expensive locations to buy a house in Italy include: Bologna, where the average price is $706,000, Rome, where houses cost $618,000 and in Florence $834,000.

Among the highest increases in prices were registered in Barletta, up 15.9% compared to a year ago, as well as in Naples, were real estate prices increased by 11.5% in one year.

In Euros, the most expensive city to buy property is Milan, Lombardy, with an average price of €997,400, up 1.4% since the same time last year.
